Hundreds join 42-kilometre-long relay march in Kolkata against RG Kar case

Hundreds of peaceful protesters, including members of the doctor community and the civil society, joined a torch relay in Kolkata on Friday evening, seeking justice for RG Kar trainee woman doctor.
The 42-kilometre-long torch relay began on Friday evening at Highland Park with its destination at Shyamabazar.
Between Highland Park and Shyamabazar, the march had stoppage points at Ruby, Science City, Beleghata, National Medical College and Seth Sukhlal Karnani Memorial Hospital, where a group of people would pass the torch to the following group at the next point.
Rimjhim Mitra, one of the organisers of the rally, said that this was for a ‘unified demand of justice’.
“We have reclaimed the nights, showed our resilience in fighting tooth and nail against corruption, and formed human chains along several kilometres, towards a unified demand of justice”, she said.
“Multiple forums from different sectors are coming together as a single unit, doctors’ forums, junior doctors, reclaim the night campaigners, East Bengal, Mohun Bagan, Mohammedan club supporters, IT professionals and so on, in solidarity with the Junior Doctors’ Front, in this fight for justice and protest against corruption”, she added.
Many people who joined in the relay march expressed that it was a solidarity protest to convey to the doctors that they were not alone in the fight.
“The doctors are not alone. The city is with them. All the people who have come to this rally are not doctors. We are from different parts of the city. Some engineers, some IT, some other services. Retired people. We are showing the doctors and the victim’s family that we are with them and will be”, said one of the protesters.
Doctors in Kolkata have been protesting in solidarity with and have been demanding justice for the woman trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.
